Kenren Taisho is the rambunctious General of Heaven's Western Army and former incarnation of Sha Gojyo. Lacks respect for those above him in the chain of command but inspires profound loyalty in his own subordinates. Strong, intelligent, not quite as hot-headed as Gojyo. Loves sake and cherry blossoms. Avid fisherman. Something of a neat-freak.

Konzen Douji is the nephew of the Merciful Goddess Kanzeon and former incarnation of Genjyo Sanzo. A very bored bureaucrat who lets life pass him by; his only known friend is Tenpou. Gets saddled with Goku when the boy takes a liking to his hair. Much softer than Sanzo despite his short temper. Wants to become more worldly, like Kenren and Tenpou.

Although they knew of each other by reputation, Kenren and Konzen didn't meet until chapter 5 when Goku, Kenren and Tenpou created a disturbance at the Jade Emperor's party. A furious Konzen found them and scolded Goku, only to have his personal space invaded by a jovial Kenren.
